Double Directional Cylinders
Double directional cylinders have a rod with a central piston that protrudes from each end of the body. The cylinder has two ports at either extent of the body and the piston and rod can be moved either way by the flow of oil. This type of cylinder is ideal for vehicle steering applications.
In the example shown the cylinder also forms part of the steering geometry.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Single Cylinder replaces two | The force of the cylinder is based on the smaller annular area |
Both directions of travel have equal force and speed | Construction needs to accommodate any out of straighness to eliminate side loading |
Can incorperate tracking adjustment | Complex construction |
Can be operated in either direction |
